Poverty

You'll remember the story about Jesus, when He was in Bethany, a woman came to him with a jar of expensive perfume which she poured on Him. The disciples thought it was a waste and felt the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor. Jesus said to them that the poor will always be with us.

Interestingly, no one asked Him "Why?"

Why should the poor be always with us? Why is it that despite all our efforts over the years to eliminate poverty the poor will always be there? Is Jesus saying that we're wasting our time and all our hard work is futile? Of course not.

Is it perhaps that the poor are there to give us all an opportunity to practice charity?

The Bible is full of examples and warnings to those better off to be charitable and help those in need.
